In their words...
I know that we will have rough spots, and teachers are saying that MYD is
a lot of work right now, but we are already seeing a tremendous difference
around here. As one of our fifth graders said, "This is a changed school ."
It's a way to help kids learn.
--Lindsay
It's better because you can help kids with being honest and Concerns are not
for tattling, but to help them.
--Tony
I think it's a good program for kids to be responsible for what
they did at school.
--Brandon
It's good because it helps you think about the things you did.
--Caitlin
It's okay. Like if you're bad if you go to Step 1,
you get to relieve your badness.
--Brett (a kindergartner)
It's a good program. It helps you learn to control your actions and temper
and stuff.
--Nick
I like it. It's making my school a better place because last time we had PDQ
people kept doing stuff on purpose, but now they don't.
--Christian
I don't like it. I used to get away with stuff cuz the teachers didn't see
everything. Now I have to be responsible for myself and can't get away with
anything.
--Tommy
It's cool. I like it. It gives you a chance to tell yourself what you did
wrong.
--Harrison
I like the Concerns because you don't have to bug the teacher.
--Brian
I'm the librarian at a school that just started make your day this year.
This incident happened the second time I saw this class. A 3rd grader chose
step one by talking. A few minutes later, we spoke and he returned to work
at the table. I was busy working while class completed their assignment when
I looked up and saw that he was in step one, again. At first, I wondered if
what little mind I have had vacated and I had forgotten him, but I was
positive I he had returned to the activity from step one. I went over to him
and said, "Didn't I release you from step one?"
He replied, "Yes, but when I returned to the table, I forgot and started to
talk again, so I put myself in step one, again."
